The
first Passat, introduced in 1974, marked a radical
departure for Volkswagen: it was a front-wheel-drive
sedan powered by a water-cooled engine. Another
radical departure took place for the 1998 model
year with a completely new Passat. The Passat
(which refers to a European wind) is slightly
larger than its predecessor, and features stylish
eye-catching lines. Since its redesign, Passat
sales have climbed more than 150 percent.
The
new Passat is available as a sedan or wagon, in
one of the following trims: GLS 1.8T, GLS V6,
and GLX. The base GLS is powered by a 170-hp turbocharged
four-cylinder engine, while the GLS V6 and the
GLX are equipped with a 190-hp V-6.
The
exterior of the new Passat has been resculpted,
resulting in a slightly longer vehicle with a
sleeker profile. The new grille and headlight
assembly are complimented by chrome trim strips
and redesigned taillights. All new Passats are
equipped with four-wheel ABS disc brakes and dual
front and side-impact airbags. Volkswagen's 4MOTION
AWD system is optional on the V-6 powered models.
Extensive
safety standards are present at every model level,
such as ABS brakes, traction control and front
fog lights for murky nights and early mornings.
Air bags include driver side, passenger side,
side impact, and side head protection. Front and
rear head restraints have also been installed,
and the rear doors have child safety locks.
