The Ford Focus is completely new from the ground
up. The car was designed and engineered in Europe,
and has already been introduced there as a replacement
for the Ford Escort, which is similar to the U.S.
Escort only in name(it is a much sportier, better
handling car in Europe).
It
is another example of a "world" car (available in
North America, Europe, and Asia), just like the
Ford Mondeo, which is sold here as the Ford Contour/Mercury
Mystique. Those vehicles never quite lived up to
their hype/development costs, but Ford is trying
to rectify that with the Focus. It will be available
in a ZX-3 3-door hatchback, LX, SE, and ZTS 4-door
sedan, and SE 4-door wagon.
The
look is based on Ford's "New Edge" design, which
combines round shapes with hard, straight edges
sharply intersecting. This look has already been
applied to the 99 and up Mercury Cougar, and to
some extent, the 98 and up Lincoln Town Car. More
Ford vehicles are on the way with this look, so
get used to it.
